To play the Djembe drum you use your open hand to ""slap"" the skin from the centre outwards. Different sounds can be made - the most distinctive are those in the middle and the outside of the drum. You can either play holding the drum between your knees, or with the large sizes sitting on top of the drum laid horizontally on the floor.
